As we've been getting more and more posts about operas, singers, etc., I thought it would be a good idea to condense those posts into one forum. I didn't want to just title it "OPERA" (it's already been done :P ), hence the humorous (I hope) "What's Opera, Doc?"

If anyone can come up with a heading that you think is more appropriate, please let me know. I'd also like some suggestions on how to word the description of this forum.

I like this heading, Melodie! It kind of gives you license to post anything -- nothing disrespectful of course -- but it gives me the feeling of posting information and maybe not getting a reply from anyone else; therefore, it's just information -- or posting a thread that you'd like others to get involved in...! :D

What is it you envision for this particular forum....anything specific?!?

To me it seems quite simple: a large part of Andrea's work concerns opera. Topics like Andrea interpreting roles, preparition for roles, comparing diverse opera roles should be here, like they are on the opera forum on the OS. Topics like "how handsome he is", which songs ne should sing, with whom he should perform a duet, are really "fan" topics, and suitable for an "all Bocelli" forum. On the opera forum we can also compare diverse voices, as long as it concerns opera singers. It's a good sign that so many people are interested in this art form now, and it's nice to share thoughts on it.

Yes, I guess we can post ALL THINGS OPERA in this forum - including Andrea and opera - everything else related to Andrea can be posted in General Discussion. If a thread goes WAY off-topic (which OCCASIONALLY happens :roll: ), I can split the thread. :wink:

I like Rossini! He earned a lot of money as a composer and retired at the age of 37, to dedicate himself to a life of cooking and dining with friends, occasionally writing some fun stuff. Do you know the "Duetto buffo per due gatti"? This is the famous cat duet. It was told that Rossini had a love affair, and stood in the garden of his beloved's house, imitating a cat as a sign that he was there. It's really a fun duet. Rossini was also an inventive hobby cook. He created the "Tournedos Rossini", the "Insalata Rossini" (expensive, with truffles!) and ,maybe even more!

Yes, Nina, I knew he was a great cook and in the end of his life did nothing but. I think he had an all round zest for life which comes through in his music and in his words. He was irreverent - my kind of guy.

As for that quote, I think as a composer, one must accept that their work is heard through the mind of the conductor, than depends on the skill of the instrumentalists and finally, heard through the voice, physical condition and personalities of the singers. At each placement, the composer takes a greater risk, opening his work up to wider and wider interpretation. The singer presents the most risky, human scenario - so that is perhaps why Rossini would like to have opera without the singers - it would save him from this worry. That's my take on his quote. Maybe you see it differently.

The best place to enjoy music without any hint criticism or touch of human frailty is - of course - in the shower.
