Keep an eye on this girl; after seeing, hearing and meeting her in Bridgeport on Friday, it's obvious that there are good things ahead for her. It's not just her voice, which amazes you - but her poise and demeanor. Her parents have done a very commendable job so far. wink

Jack Lenz and "Go Where Love Goes":

Twist of fate places Jack Lenz song on Andrea Bocelli album

In November 2004, when million-selling Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli returns from a two-year absence on the music scene with his Andrea album, the track listing will include "Go Where Love Goes," a song written by veteran film composer and SOCAN member Jack Lenz.

But it was a twist of fate that the song ended up there. Lenz originally composed "Go Where Love Goes" (with his son Asher) as the closing theme for the upcoming Warner Brothers movie The Lazarus Child. Since the film deals with a young girl in a coma, the producers wanted it performed by an appropriately young voice. Lenz suggested Holly Stell, a California-based, 12-year-old singer who had impressed him with her strong voice and perfect pitch when she sang at a charity event in Toronto.

"When I wrote the song, I thought of Holly," he says, and he invited her to record it in Berlin with a 60-piece orchestra. "She'd never sung live with an orchestra before. Everybody was nervous, but she sang it in one take and just blew everybody away. I think the producers were kind of shocked at what she could do."

One of those shocked producers happened to be a friend of Caterina Caselli - a key architect of Andrea Bocelli's success. "She sent the song to Bocelli, and he loved it," says Lenz, "When she told me, I was floored. It was very serendipitous."

So the version of "Go Where Love Goes" on Bocelli's Andrea album - slated for release Nov. 9 in North America - is a duet with Stell. She'll also sing it with him on an NBC-TV special in November in New York Bridgeport]. And it turns out Jack Lenz is now writing a full album of songs for Stell.

Go where a gift goes

By Richard Rico

I WOULD exhort you to remember Holly Stell's name, but I'm too late: Half the planet already knows it. I would insist you hear the range of her sweet, angelic voice, but now that her duet with famed Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli on his new CD, "Andrea," is out and climbing the charts; and their song, "Go Where Love Goes," will theme the up-coming movie, "The Lazarus Child;" and she just returned from her first L.A. session of recording her own CD; and pop singer Michael Bolton told her backstage after a concert in Bridgeport, Conn., that he would like to make a recording with her, you are probably already aware of Holly Stell. The hills are alive with the sounds of her music.
Holly is a Prodigy with a capital P, and that stands for Poise. And for the purposes of what she is and will be, that rhymes with Phenom. To think that it all started with a Vacaville Fiesta Days talent show in 2002.

Since then, Holly and her voice and her bright face framed by long, flowing butternut hair has been on a fast track. And she hopes to become famous, so she will be able to help children of the world through her dedication to Kids With a Cause, a program for gifted kids to do exactly that.

Yes, of course, Holly Stell lives in Vacaville. And there's one other thing: She's 12.

Learning about Holly started for me the day her uncle, Barry Wells, handed me a CD at the Nut Tree Airport. It had one song. "My niece, Holly, sang this duet with tenor Andrea Bocelli," he said. "I think she's phenomenal; see what you think." I slipped it into my car's player. The music came up. Andrea's and Holly's voices were a perfect pairing. I pulled to the side of the road and said something professional, like: Wow.

IT WAS how I imagined it would be to talk to a blithe spirit that day we sat around the dining room table in her aunt Kristy Wells' home on Vine St. Just two days back from singing "live" with Bocelli in that Connecticut concert and two days before leaving for her recording session in L.A., Holly was able to fit me in. As you might expect, she is articulate and mature beyond her 12 years. Because of her rapidly evolving career, she is home-schooled through a Pathways program based in Santa Rosa. As you might also expect, she's a perfect student.

After winning that Fiesta talent contest, it was a judge who urged Holly's parents to nurture her extraordinary gift. She entered a Face Finders talent showcase in Palm Springs, and blew them away. Agents and talent scouts started calling. Since then, life for her family - mother Darlene, father Larry (Butch), and brothers Noah and Tanner - haven't been the same. But they are nothing if not totally supportive of Holly's gift, although she admits there are times when the brothers help keep her grounded, like when she practices: "Holly, can you hold it down, we're playing Nintendo!" Holly smiles. "I try to be down to earth."

AND SO it began. Holly joined Voices Of Eve'n Angels, a nationally acclaimed choir in Benicia, and that led to concert appearances-and Holly solos-across the country. She sang in a Pageant of Peace at the White House in 2003. As she began training with singing coach Susan Cox of Fairfield and VOENA director Annabelle Marie, choir and solo appearances continued to grow. But it was at a birthday party for pop singer Hilary Duff in Toronto that life really started to change. Movie composer Jack Lenz heard Holly sing-actually, he accompanied her on the piano-and asked if she would like to record a track for "Go Where Love Goes" that he wrote for "Lazarus." Only one thing: She and her mother would have to fly to Berlin, where a 65-piece orchestra was waiting. Lenz gave Holly the music to learn. Later he called, asking her to sing it to him over the phone. That did it: Perfect voice, perfect pitch. They went to Berlin. Holly taped it in one take. Bocelli taped his part in Milan, and technology merged them into the now-famed duet. Holly and Andrea had not met until she sang with him on stage in Bridgeport's Harvard Yard two weeks ago.

"He was incredibly nice," Holly said, her eyes sparkling. "And we held hands" as a sellout crowd of 8,000 roared to its feet.

Holly tinkled the keys on her aunt Kristy's piano that autumn afternoon, sunlight in her golden hair. So young, so gifted. And I thought: This must be how a star is born.

Yes, Melodie, I was wondering the same thing when I read that! Wonder where he was hiding?? Wasn't that the greatest article on little Holly? She was such a sweetheart in Bridgeport! Hoping great things for her. Maybe her singing a duet with Michael would help pick up his career again! :purpbana

If you're Jack's son, wouldn't she be your sister, too? I have my doubts....
