hi well this has to be my favourite book of all time it has been a favourite since i first had it read to me at 8 yrsold and finally laid hands on it at 13
many days& nights were spent reading with great excitement a feeling of being there with Frodo in his struggle against the dark lord sauron
his perilous journey to mordor could have been a metaphor for my struggle against blindness.
the book set the standard for fantasy writing many have tried to emulate Tolkien and failed he is quite simply in a class of his own,
the book never lets up you are hooked although i did find it difficult to get into once you get over these inital problems you are there for the duration
some have criticised it asbeing childish ott and ridiculous but they miss the point in fantasy you suspend disbelief and enter an others imagination to enter Tolkiens is a huge privilage

Well, you beat me to the punch, Alex! LOL
I just read this book for the first time recently, and was so completely captivated that the moment I finished it, I went back to page one and began all over again! (That is something I've most definitely never done before!)
The scope of this book astonishes me - J.R.R. Tolkien didn't just write an epic tale, he created an entire world unto itself. Middle Earth, it's peoples, it's history, languages, calendars - as a writer, I find this feat almost incomprehensible. If he were alive today, I'm fairly certain I'd be at Mr. Tolkien's door begging to learn from the master.
If you read nothing else in your lifetime, READ THIS BOOK!!!!!! You will not regret it!
nell'amicizia,
Echo
PS! - I also must strongly recommend The Hobbit, as it is a sort of prequel to The Lord of the Rings. I don't think it is necessary to read The Hobbit in order to understand LOTR, but it's a nice introduction to the world that is Middle Earth! _________________ My heart opens to your voice

Echo your right Tolkien created a masterpiece he was just one of a kind :D :)
i have found myself going back to LOTR more often now in fact friends joke the braille should be worn away
the films are fantastic but inaccurate and i felt the Two Towers was lacking something :? but what who knows
The Hobbit is in itself a great book and as an introduction to Tolkien its hard to beat  .
cheers

| Also, for those who just cannot get enough of Middle Earth, J.R.R. Tolkien's son Christopher edited and posthumously published his father's "The Silmarillion" and a few other works. The Silmarillion is very long...it is the history of Middle Earth within which the saga of LOTR takes place. This work also shows Tolkien's fantastic research into Celtic languages. Not a 'light'read, but well worth it! |

| Yes it is thrilling series of books. I recommend you read first the book Silmarillion. Its kind of history book to things to happen in the others books. I just read his(professor Tolkiens) biography and it was almost as exciting as Silmarillion, Hobbits, Lord of the ring. In my opinion everybody should read the books. Theres deep philosophy in them...its not finding something its finding yourself :?: :D |
