STAYING IN A CONVENT IN TUSCANY
When travellers were almost only pilgrims and merchants, convents were the first "hotels" to welcome them. Usually for free and with a great sense of christian hospitality based on charity. But they were few. Now that tourists reach certain places by millions, it is evident that convents cannot offer free hospitality anymore, even if the spirit of the past has survived in most of them. Tuscan convents are usually located in wonderful places, have a perfectly organized accomodation-system (often for groups) and relatively low prices.
The atmosphere, of course, is rather serious, and the priests and nuns who run the accomodation sections of their convents expect visitors to behave respectfully, dress decently and often be back at night for the general closing time, which is sometimes rather early. They do not specially control the visitors' religious belonging, but it is obvious that most of the convents usually receive requests of hospitality from christian tourists and groups, although staying there may be a quiet, relaxing and interesting experience for anyone.
