An evening in the presence of the charming Andrea Bocelli is as enjoyable an experience as one could ever wish for. I had the pleasure of sharing the evening with a spellbound capacity audience at the MetroRadio Arena in Newcastle on Saturday. Andrea was supported by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, ably conducted by Marcello Rota. The orchestra opened with a brisk blast of the overture from Carmen, although I do wish Signor Rota would vary this occasionally.
Andrea, appearing contented and relaxed, launched into Leoncavallo’s Mattinata. His sweet vocals glided effortlessly from gentle and soft to blistering power, all in one phrase. He then scaled the heights through his traditional repertoire of arias by Verdi, Tosti and Rodrigo.
No less brilliant was his glamorous co-star and fellow Italian, Paola Sanguinetti. Her rendition of “O mio babbino caro” was sublime. I have heard them sing together many times over the years, but their duets -climaxing in the old favourite “O Sole Mio” - almost raised the roof.
Andrea has amassed his enormous following through prodigious recording and his readiness to embrace the non-classical world. This was exemplified by the standing ovations he received for the two encores from his latest recording “Andrea”. He sang the melodramatic “Dell ‘Amore non si sa” and the very popish “Sempre oMai”.
Proceedings were concluded with the fantastic “Con te partiro”, a fitting end to a truly uplifting experience.
Having demonstrated his extraordinary vocal talent, Andrea also displayed his charm. Having been clapped back for a third encore by the grateful crowd, he said falteringly, “ I speak horrible English, not enough to tell you many things I’d like to tell you.” He went on to thank his fellow performers and the appreciative audience.
Having had the good fortune to have experienced 11 of this enchanting man’s live performances, I conclude that he is at the peak of his profession, a fact that was patently obvious on Saturday night. _________________ All people smile in the same language |

Thanks, Michael! Beautifully written as always!
You've seen Andrea 11 times?! One of those was an opera, wasn't it? I think you're putting some of the "travelling fans" to shame.
When and where will your 12th experience be? |

As Melodie said, this is beautifully written. In fact some phrasing is identical to the follwoing review that was posted on the official site. There was no author given for this article in the Journal--was it you Michael?
| Quote: | Bocelli audience hits heights
Feb 14 2005
By The Journal
Three thousand Labour Party delegates took over our newest concert venue but in the end it didn't matter. The music - to borrow The Sage Gateshead's slogan - had moved and 9,500 fans had followed it.
This enormous audience at the Metro Radio Arena was the biggest for classical music in the North-East since Luciano Pavarotti performed his sole UK concert at the venue in 2000.
Pavarotti was then in the twilight of his career. Andrea Bocelli, the blind Italian superstar, is at the peak of his, as was patently obvious on Saturday night.
His voice slips effortlessly from sweet and soft to blistering power, all in a phrase.
He didn't so much hit as glide up to the high notes and occasionally drew gasps from his audience for the sheer duration of some of the tricky ones lower down.
The concert started with a brisk blast of the overture from Carmen by the accompanying Czech National Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Marcello Rota then went off-stage to collect the star of the show.
Centre stage, hands hanging loosely by his side and eyes shut, the tenor launched into Leoncavallo's Mattinata. Big screens made clear even to those at the back that Bocelli scales the heights without even breaking into a sweat.
No less brilliant was his glamorous co-star, soprano and fellow Italian Paola Sanguinetti. They have sung together many times and their duets - climaxing in the old favourite O Sole Mio - nearly lifted the roof.
Bocelli has amassed an enormous following, partly through prodigious recording and also for his readiness to embrace the non-classical world.
Purists might have wished for an unamplified performance but this was right for this venue.
With the talent, Bocelli also clearly has the charm. Clapped back for a third encore, he said falteringly: "I speak horrible English - not enough to tell you many things I'd like to tell you."
He went on to thank his orchestra and his co-star while.
From the women in the audience, there were audible "Ahh"s.
* An interview with Andrea Bocelli appears in the February edition of Culture, The Journal's new 64-page magazine, currently on sale in newsagents for £1.30.

Thank you MichaelS for coming back to tell us about the concert! I agree, There should be more changes in the repertoire, lets face it, he has been doing the same old same old for a long time now, and i know he puts in the odd new song, but i think its time for a change! Saying that , at Manchester on the 24th, i wont mind what he sings, just as long as he sings!
Did you manage to take any photo's Michael? _________________ La tua voce e come un dolce dolores nel mio cuore! Non c'e nessuno migliore di te!! |

I agree wholeheartedly Tina and like you, I simply want to hear his sweet melodious voice. I don't know why the repertoire isn't varied more given the material he has at his disposal, however, if it's what he is comfortable with then I am more than happy to savour the result.
Unfortunately I left my camera in the hotel so I didn't get any photos.......sorry.

I plan to undergo some more "Bocelli Therapy" in Manchester on 24th, where, hopefully, I will meet with Tina, Lorna, Tez & Co for their pre-concert bash.

| To see a picture of Andrea, click on the URL at the end of the Journal review that Fantom posted (Thankyou!). It will take you to the original article. Btw, where is everybody lately? Signora Inammorata? Willma? Everybody is so quiet! |

I understand the doubts in everyone's mind regarding the two accounts of the show as posted by Fantom.
Yes, I had input to both reports.
I attended the concert with a reporter friend. I drafted my account of the evening (as posted), but in the opinion of the professional, it was a little over the top and was, therefore, "toned down" a little for the Journal.
Apologies for the confusion.

Hello Tina , Lorna , Melodie and all,
I would love to hear Andrea sing Immenso in concert. I am told that he has never sung this live at any performance. It's one of those songs that I return to time and time again. It's been running through my mind for a week or two now!
Manchester is right around the corner Tina e Lorna !
Keeps singing!

I love that song too Anna!
There are so many I would love to hear Andrea sing 'live' but the biggest thrill for me was hearing him sing Sogno at Wembly arena 2 years ago. I know he has many other great ones but that particular one is an all time favourite of mine.
7 more sleeps to go Anna!
