For those of you who have not read this Pulitzer prize winning book by Larry McMurtry, I envy you the experience. I have read it several times and it has remained my favorite fictional work of all time. It is a love story, an adventure, an American epic - to qoute the jacket. The main character is an old Texas Ranger, Augustus McCrae, who is the perfect blend of rascal and saint. It is impossible for anyone with a pulse not to fall in love with him. The setting is the sleepy town of Lonesome Dove in southwest Texas. Gus and his long time friend, W.F. Call, decide to steal some Mexican cattle and drive them north to Montana to start a ranch. They take along with them a cast of characters including the town whore, Lorena, whom Gus presents as engaged in a noble profession. There is humor, wit, love, passion, adventure, terror and heartache within these 842 pages. If you want to fall in love, if you want to cry when a book is over, this is the book for you.

Wilma I wholeheartedly agree :) I read this book several times and it's a wonderful read. I think for me at least that Gus McCrae goes down in history as one of the best fictional characters.
