I was very disappointed in the show. It was billed as an Andrea Bocelli Christmas and Andrea was ultimately a side act. If I wanted to see the Nutcracker I would have spent $75 a ticket and witnessed it in New York. I paid $200 a ticket to see Andrea, not some redundant ballet.
For Andrea to sing 3 versions of Avia Maria, I could not have been more dsiappointed. After seeing him at Mohegan Sun and Providence this show was not what I expected or what it was billed as. I feel sorry for those who went to see him for the first time. I spoke to a couple that could not believe that was it. 6 or 7 songs, three or which were the same does not make for an enjoyable evening.
I would recommend people avoiding the rest of the Christmas shows or at the very least expect to see Andrea sing only a few songs. Certainly not worth the money that we are expected to pay when we see such a star. |

You have no business recommending anything to anybody. I am sure people can make their own decisions without having to ask you. There may be another reason why you didn't enjoy the show... maybe too much champagne, perhaps? _________________ "Canto alla vita alla sua bellezza ad ogni sua

I attended the Boston show last night, and I couldn't have been HAPPIER. This was exactly as it was billed: "A Royal Christmas Featuring Andrea Bocelli"; all of the advertising clearly mentioned that there would be principal dancers from various companies.
If I recall, he sang TWO versions of Ava Maria - musically, completely different from each other. Maybe you left the show before it was over...while I was there, Andrea sang a total of 11 songs, which included 2 fabulous encores - La Preghierra and Nessun Dorma.
I've been to several Bocelli concerts, and when Andrea's not on stage, it's the soprano or the orchestra performing. I was very pleased this time to have something different...beautifully performed ballet, for one...the other dance company was exceptional, also.
I was very pleased to have the opportunity to see Denyce Graves, also, as I know of her but have never seen her perform. I think she enhanced the show as well.
As for Andrea - IN TOP FORM from the first note....no hesitation, no "warming up" - he was THERE. Very relaxed, very confident; definitely at his best. To be honest, I didn't expect this show to be as good as it was, and I am happy to be able to say that I was pleasantly surprised.
The only complaint I have is that they didn't print out a repertoire of the show, but I'm trying to get it. |

Why don't you gals leave this woman alone. She is entitled to her own opinion.
According to the Herald: Oddly, he offered two “Ave Marias,” one by Schubert and another by Gounod, and a third number called “Santa Maria,” which left one wondering if he had a Madonna (not the singer) complex.
Perhaps this is where she got the notion that he sang Ave Maria three times.
I am sure not a few people thought this lack of variety odd or disappointing. _________________ Although, in his life, he was often called the imbecile from Illinois, history has proven otherwise. |

I said something hostile? I merely expressed MY opinions...and pointed out the discrepancy in the number of songs that Andrea sang.
Of course people will be disappointed if they thought they were attending a "Bocelli concert" - but this was not advertised as such. From what we saw as we looked around the Garden, it appeared that this show was almost a sellout....everyone I spoke to (and as you know, I can be a little pushy) was very happy with everything, no disappointments whatsoever.
His little speech at the end was also the longest one I've ever heard him give - and even THAT elicited a positive response from the audience. |

I'm surprised that anyone would consider these three pieces of music "the same." I think Schubert, Gounod, & Mascagni would be offended. _________________ Fantom |

I wasn't at the Boston show, but I was at the DC show a few nights ago. Andrea sang two different versions of Ave Maria---spaced well apart. They may have the same title but they DO NOT sound alike. And Sancta Maria may start out with the words 'Ave Maria', but it is it's own piece of music as well. Three, DIFFERENT, very beautiful selections. And you Boston fans are lucky indeed to have heard Nessun Dorma. We didn't hear that in DC--so they are apparently changing the line-up a little. I have always loved Nessun Dorma (who doesn't?) but, out of the 6 Andrea Bocelli performances I've attended in 3 1/2 years,I have been blessed to hear him sing it live only once--last April at the Meadowlands. He chose selections mostly from 'Sacred Arias' because THIS IS A CHRISTMAS SHOW!!!!! To all the people who have yet to go to the next performances of 'A Royal Christmas'---please make note of this. There will be ballet, there will be orchestra and choir performances, Denyce Graves (or Robin Follman) will be singing solos, and there will be performances by the Shumka Ukrainian Dancers as well (the DC audience seemed to especially enjoy them). Andrea will sing throughout this and will close the show. According to these fan reports, he is singing anywhere from 9 to 12 songs. I was glad to get that much of him. I was little concerned that he wouldn't sing that much. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that about how much he sings in a 'regular' concert? _________________ "To sing, to sing, to sing......." Sorry, Melodie, you're right! Your response came so close on the heels of the remarks of the self-appointed grinch/scold of the forums that I grouped you together. You have far too much class to object to a sincere opinion, no matter how at odds that opinion may be with your own. A good example to all. _________________ Although, in his life, he was often called the imbecile from Illinois, history has proven otherwise. |

I was at the Boston performance and I was captivated by it. I really loved the songs from Sacred Arias which belonged in this Christmas program. I hadn't heard AB sing Ave Verbum Corpus (sp?) live before. I enjoyed Denice Graves singing Christmas carols and the duet of White Christmas. The ballerina dancing with the candle as AB was singing, the Nutcracker sequences, loved the costumes. I guess I'm in the minority here, but I really loved it. Especially Bocelli, of course! _________________ Where there's life, there's hope |

Melodie responded to you: "I said something hostile? I merely expressed MY opinions...and pointed out the discrepancy in the number of songs that Andrea sang."
And you are ignoring the real meaning of her response. Of course, very convenient for you. Class? Look who's talking... _________________ "Canto alla vita alla sua bellezza ad ogni sua

I attended the Royal Christmas Show in Washington, DC and I thought it was wonderful. When the ticket was purchased, I knew that Andrea would be sharing the stage with others. I had expected just 6 or 7 songs from him. How delighted I was that he gave us almost equal to a regular concert. And when he was not on stage, who could object to the beautiful voice of Denyce Graves.
I am sorry that the original post on this thread was one of disappointment. If he/she expected pure Andrea, then their expectations were not realized. But the concert was what is was advertised to be...a shared stage of Christmas presentations. Lessons are learned easiest when we have stubbed our toe. Our poster has learned, I am sure, to be more careful next time to make sure the concert is total Andrea before purchasing a ticket.
And he can sing every version of "Ava Maria" known to man...I will love them all. |
