Hello Southlake,
Thank you for posting. Did you attend opening night or Thursday evening? What did you find most memorable? You must have been very excited to be at your very first concert in New York!

Hi, I just got home form the Friday concert. I have to tell you that I had real difficulty hearing Andrea. I was in the rear orchestra. The orchestra was way too loud. I've been to see Andrea eight times now, so I can take this with a grain of salt, however I brought a first timer with me and I dont' think he got to experience the "real" Andrea. Don't get me wrong I don't think there was one thing wrong with his performance, I was just not able to hear him as well as I would have liked. The orchestra was wonderful but I didn't travel three hours and pay 250 for a room and 120 for a ticket to hear the orchestra.
Andrea very generously gave us four encores, which I really enjoyed. I heard people on the way out wishing for the usual, apparently everyone was not aware that this was a different type of concert.
Ciao

| Anna, we were there Wed. for the opening night. We had a hearing problem too. My husband thought it was because the microphone was to far from Andrea. I have had the strangest let down after the concert. I had waited since May when we bought the tickets, thinking every day Sept is comming. Now it is sort of like a child and Christmas, it's over and I feel lost because I don't have this to look forward to any more. hopefully I can go again. |

SB and Southlake,
Thanks so much for your posts.
I understand it was intended that Andrea sing without a microphone as I understand is usual for the truest of classical performances. But those who are well versed in this area can speak more intelligently about this subject.
SB, of the eight performances you have attended, can you compare this experience to other Andrea classical performances?
I quess I am left feeling that the WOW factor may have been missing for both of you and wondering if any of the media criticism is valid from a fan's prospective. |

I cannot tell you if the media criticism is valid because I never read it. I feel they are biased against Andrea sometimes and I don't need their opinion to validate what I like. I'm sensing from your post though that I may have hit on something that they wrote. I have seen Andrea in large venue's and was looking forward to a more intimate experience and I think it would have been had I been able to hear him better. Up until now, there isn't one concert that I have not been enthralled with. I could hear Andrea some of the time, but not all of the time. I know from what I did hear that Andrea sang his heart out.
Ciao

SB,
Thanks SB for your reply. Over time critics have stated Andrea's voice is not strong enough without mechanical amplification. Only wondering what fans think about that issue.
Grazie,

Good evening everyone.
I attended Andrea's performance last night at Avery Fisher Hall. Let me just say that I love Andrea and he has an incredible voice. However, the acoustics at this theatre is absolutely terrible. Bocelli has a very powerful voice and that was not present at this theatre. I was disappointed that such a theatre did not accommodate an artist like Bocelli. This was the first time I actually was able to see him live and I was pretty disappointed with the sound. |

Are all operas/songs to sound alike and if so why? There are several songs that are remakes I don't like all of them but I'm always glad for the different versions.

Thanks to RosieD who replied to my post, I was able to attend my first concert to see Andrea on Wednesday, the first hight. Needless to say I was thrilled beyond words. We sat in the 3rd row center and, as Rosie said, if he would spit it would have landed on us. I am no expert on opera so I cannot speak to that part of my experience. But just to be there, to be in the same room, in the presence of this man was all I could have expected. The thing that always gets to my heart is that he is so humble. What I mean by that is he does not put on airs although he certainly could. As you watch him you always see him asking the conductor, giving the conductor his hand, trying his best to do all that is expected of him and more. He constantly says thank you to the audience and acknowledges the musicians. As far as I'm concerned he sang his heart out. As for the reviews, I have read all of them and I only hope that Andrea does not take these to heart as he has been through this many times before, i.e. Page 235 of this book 'The Music of Silence" I quote :........tired of newspapers that say whataever they want to about me, without thinking of the trouble they can do do me, tired of the critics who turn their spiteful artillery fire against my success. Clinging to their princes, forgetting that no one is the repository of absolute truths, they ignore the facts, but princes fall while the facts remain. That's how I think of my fate, and no one can imagine how dear to me, in the solitide of this room, is the music of silence." I hope and pray that Andrea knows how much we love him and believe in him and that that will help sustain him. I hope he goes on to bigger and better things. As for me I can't wait until I can be in his presence again at a concert even though he will never know who I am.l

Sorry if you've already seen this elsewhere, but I want to include my take on what I consider to have been an outstanding concert:
Andrea Bocelli's September 9, 2006, performance at Avery Fisher Hall was to my ears everything Andrea and his loved ones, fans, and other admirers could have wished. My mother and I sat high up on stage right so that our view was of the top of Andrea's head. Yet his voice carried--strong, beautiful, expressive, and true--at all points in the concert. From our vantage and listening point, he was never overpowered by the orchestra and was the master of every note.
I was first attracted to Andrea's voice by its rich ability to communicate, and this quality is even more pronounced now, almost nine years after I first heard the opening phrases of "Con te partiṛ." Hearing his voice unamplified yesterday was a gift to remember for the rest of my life. He conveyed a sense of being entirely present in the musical phrases and lyrics, which were supported by clear diction, amazing breath control, and an impressive range that is so lovely at all points it should warm the coldest heart and draw the most indifferent listener into the heart of the music.
Hearing the (to me) unfamiliar Verdi orchestrations by Berio and then the work by Steven Mercurio that began the encores was a magnificent experience. At the same time, hearing my favorite Bocelli piece of all times--"Vaghissima Sembianza"--and having the concert end with a powerful and perfect "Di quella pira" were also infinitely happy moments.
After his last encore and curtain call, Andrea left the stage with his characteristic friendly wave. I hope he left the stage aware of how outstandingly he had sung and feeling great satisfaction with his Lincoln Center concerts.
If anyone--fan or critic--had trouble hearing Andrea in Avery Fisher Hall, it was entirely the fault of the hall and not of the singer. Because of the good acoustics in my inexpensive perch, I can vouch absolutely for this statement.
I hope that any in the audience who felt some disappointment because of the unfamiliarity of much of the program will reconsider their reaction and focus instead on the amazing good fortune of being witnesses to the ever-expanding dimensions of Andrea's voice.
And that voice truly is exceptional in its quality and significance. If some critics are unable to appreciate his voice fully, it is certainly because they are unable to think beyond the narrow confines of the checklists they use to judge performances. They are unable to recognize, understand, or welcome qualities that signal a unique and profound talent who touches not only the mind and senses but also the soul.

Hi everyone:
I was at Saturday's performance, and was lucky to be seated just to Andrea's and Asher Fisch's left in the first row. He often looked at the conductor during the performance and I had the experience of a lifetime watching him interact with Mr. Fisch. They had such a warm and collaborative exchange between them that probably goes unnoticed the further back you sit. I was worried the orchestra would drown him out being so close to the stage, but Andrea's voice is so strong and he seemed so in command of his performance, it was truly an honor to be there and experience his beautiful voice. When Andrea hit the high notes with such precision, you could see the smile across Mr. Fisch's face as he was conducting the orchestra. It was truly a beautiful, memorable performance.
